Rural Ethics:
Clinical Decision Making Where You Live
3 CEU Hours in Ethics
APA's 2006 Ethics Code related to rural practice:
Manage rural practice difficulties including multiple
role issues that challenge the provider from the first session to the crises
that surface later. When to decline a patient, when to consider dual roles'
interference in treatment, how to decide, where to turn for help in the process.
Review of the new 2006 APA Ethics Code with in-depth consideration of its
application concerning the often complicated ways that private and professional
lives may overlap in the rural practice of psychology.
What to do when your worlds overlap?
Learn how to routinely think through the considerations of rural ethics for
each case so that your practice remains strong in competence, objectivity, and
minimizes ethics and legal exposures.
- The new APA Ethics Code:
- Absolute limits in role definition
- Some gray areas of multiple roles
- The criteria: the new standard articulated
- Establishing a process for spontaneous decision making in the rural
practice:
- Laying down the fundamental aspects of concern within the Ethics
Code
- Developing an individual blue print for decision flow
- Personalizing the practice of decision-making for rapid application
- Establishing your own Supervision and Legal resource plan
- Practicing the hypothetical application of these skills on a regular
basis
- Documenting the actual application of these skills for problem cases
Understanding the special practice challenges in rural areas will assist the
clinician to balance their personal life with their patient responsibilities in
a way that supports the therapist's own personal freedom, and protects the
patient's rights for objective and unbiased care.
Presenter:
Dr. Deborah Warner, Licensed Clinical
Psychologist,
has been seeing patients for three decades, most of these
in rural settings, including a location where she was the only psychologist in
the county. An engaging presenter with an organized approach, Dr. Warner
teaches valuable skills while involving the participants actively in the
material. A worthwhile training.
Cost: $65 per person
